Kafue National Park covers 22,500 sq. kms making it Zambia’s largest game park and one of the largest in Africa. It is situated about 200 kms west of Lusaka.
There are 3 main rivers that feed the park from the north, the Kafue, Lunga and Lufupa Rivers. The variety of aquatic habitats are a major attraction for wildlife and waterbirds. The Busanga floodplains in the north of the park cover 750 sq. kms and this area is the major drawcard for tourism as the wildlife is abundant and diverse.
The park is dissected by the main road between Lusaka and Mongu thereby creating northern and southern sections. The northern section provides better gameviewing opportunities but is not accessible in the wet season between December and April due to the black cotton soil that makes driving impossible when wet.
The southern section has some beautiful open savanna grasslands, woodlands and dambos but does not have the same gameviewing potential as the northern section.
Accommodation consists of private safari lodges and camps in several regions of the park.
