Located in the eastern part of South Africa on the Eastern Escarpment and close to the Kruger National Park, you will find the very scenic Blyde River Canyon, third largest canyon in Africa after the Blue Nile Gorge in Ethiopia and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. It is well vegetated with impressive rock structures which have weathered over 2,3 billion years. There are many areas along the route where shelves of quartzite display magnificent examples of weathering.

This area is known as the Panorama Route and includes other beautiful and fascinating natural attractions.
The Three Rondawels are 3 hillocks that resemble round huts known locally as rondavels. There are viewpoints from where you can see them clearly with fantastic views onto the Blyde River Canyon and the lake below.
Bourkes Luck Potholes is located at the confluence of the Blyde and Treur Rivers and is the most accessible part of the Blyde River Canyon. The erosive action of rocks and gravel have carved beautiful potholes in the riverbeds of these two rivers. There is an interesting museum here and a lovely walk takes you over bridges to view the potholes.
The wonderful Lisbon, Berlin and Mac Mac Waterfalls are all close to the road and easily accessible. None of these waterfalls are in the Canyon but are all close to the main route.
Gods Window is the highest viewpoint, looking onto the Lowveld below with a drop of more than 1,000 metres to where the Kruger Park lies. You can follow a steep path up to the Rain Forest which is often covered in mist.
Pilgrims Rest was previously a gold mining village and is now a living museum that has been restored to its 1870’s character with many quaint shops, restaurants and craft stalls. It is off the main Blyde River Canyon route but makes a pleasant change from the other attractions.
Swadini is located at the bottom of the Blyde River Canyon on a lake that offers boat cruises. There is a Visitor Information centre here.
Local art & craft can be found at all tourist areas along the Panorama Route.

The Blyde River Canyon is an excellent destination to add onto your visit to the Kruger National Park.
