Xai Xai is a small bustling town 224 kms north of Maputo and is the capital of the Gaza province. It is the first major town after Maputo where people can stock up on supplies and is a business district. The coastal part of the town, Praia do Xai Xai, is a further 10 kms and is a popular tourist destination.

There is a massive reef running parallel to the beach that provides protection against big waves and currents and is perfect for swimming. It is also a good area to spot marine turtles of which there are five different species found in Mozambique.

The Limpopo River flows into the sea near here and one can do a boat cruise to view local fishing communities at work.

A variety of accommodation and activities are offered.

Not far from Xai Xai is Bilene which is a very popular beach resort offering a range of accommodation and activities.
