Maputo is the capital of Mozambique and lies in the south of the country. It is a large city with a population of around 2 million people and has an interesting character, blending the colonialism of the past with first and third world developments. The colonial Portuguese architecture and wide streets, lined with palm trees, acacias and jacarandas, contribute to its atmosphere. There are many hotels, restaurants and nightclubs and the nightlife is vibrant and exciting.

Inhaca island lies 34 kms away in Maputo Bay and is accessible by boat or light aircraft.

The Maputo National Reserve lies 80 kms to the south and was originally established to protect the herds of elephants that were close to extinction in this area.
