Gorongosa National Park is situated in central Mozambique and covers an area of 3,770 sq. kms, lying at the tail end of the Great Rift Valley. There are a variety of different ecosystems including savanna grasslands and woodlands, dry sand forest, pans, a rain forest and montane forests on the plateau.
Prior to the civil war which ended in 1994, Gorongosa was Mozambique’s flagship wildlife reserve with some of the largest wildlife and bird populations in Africa. Most of the large mammals were killed during the war and the park has been in a state of rehabilitation since 2004. Much game has been re-introduced and considering its natural beauty, is definitely worth visiting.
Apart from a seasonal luxury tented camp, accommodation is available in Chitengo Safari Camp.
