In 1999 the Kgalakgadi Transfrontier Park was proclaimed through an amalgamation of South Africa’s Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and Botswana’s Gemsbok National Park. Located in the northwestern part of South Africa and southwestern part of Botswana respectively, this large and diverse conservation area now covers 37,000 sq. kms and offers great wildife experiences for visitors.
The Kgalakgadi Transfrontier Park encompasses dry Kalahari savanna with red sand dunes and pans that attract a variety of herbivores and predators like lion, cheetah, leopard, brown hyaena and jackal. Look out for suricates as this is prime territory for them.
On the South African side of the Park the dry Nossob and Auob Rivers are good for game viewing and there are 3 Main Camps with chalets and campsites as well as 6 Wilderness Camps in different habitats.
On the Botswana side of the Park there are two lodges and camps and several campsites in different areas of the Park. The tracks and roads here require a 4WD to negotiate. The pans in the Mabuasehube area attract a lot of game in summer.
One can also access southern Namibia via the Mata Mata Border Post which opens up a variety of exciting routes to follow on an African Safari.
The Kgalakgadi Transfrontier Park is certainly one of the top wildlife reserves in Africa and one that has a very relaxed and special atmosphere.
