The Eastern Highlands form Zimbabwe’s eastern border with Mozambique and comprise three main mountain groups, Nyanga, Bvumba and Chimanimani.
Nyanga lies in the north of this region and consists of Mount Nyangani, Zimbabwe’s highest mountain at 2,593 metres, the Nyanga National Park, the Mutarazi Falls which are the second highest in Africa, Nyazengu Nature Reserve, the Honde Valley, Pungwe Gorge and Nyanga’s Ancient Ruins.
Bvumba is a 30 km mountain promontory with sheer cliffs that drop into Mozambique and contains the beautiful Bvumba Botanical Gardens and Bunga Forest Botanical Reserve.
Chimanimani is a mountainous National Park with peaks that reach over 2,400 metres in height. This mountain range has heavily forested gorges with rivers that drop over cataracts.
This is a true wilderness area with beautiful forests that contain some rare birdlife.
Mutare is the border town that lies south of Nyanga and very close to Bvumba.
The Eastern Highlands offer a range of bedded and camping accommodation as well activities like hiking, climbing, birding, fishing and horse riding.
