For hikers and lovers of nature, this is Swaziland’s prime reserve. Located on the western border with South Africa and covering about 180 sq. kms, Malolotja is set in a beautiful mountainous area with sprawling verdant grasslands, rocky outcrops, waterfalls and streams.
Apart from animals that occur naturally like jackal, brown hyaena, aardwolf, baboon and some small mammals, several antelope species and zebra have been introduced. The habitats are perfectly suited to leopard that most definitely occur here but are too shy to be noticed.
There is a network of roads, some of which might be difficult to negotiate in a normal 2WD vehicle, that lead to stunning viewpoints and fantastic hiking trails. Most of the hiking trails are day walks but there are longer walks with overnight campsites.
A newly introduced activity here is a Canopy Tour that takes you over a gorge on a cable seat with views of the mountains and the stream below.
Accommodation is provided in self catering log cabins that overlook the mountains and grasslands. There is a campsite too.
