DAY 2

SANI MOUNTAIN LODGE, LESOTHO
Ensuite Double/Twin Room – Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

This morning you will be collected by Roof of Africa Tours at 09:00 to start your 5 Day Guided Lesotho Overland Tour. You will depart Malachite Manor in a 4WD vehicle and proceed into Lesotho via the steeply snaking Sani Pass with amazing views of the Drakensberg escarpment and valleys below. The Sani Pass climbs from 1,500 m to 2,874 m above sea level with the last 8 kms climbing nearly 1,000 m. The famous switchbacks overlooking the South African valleys are spectacular.

After lunch at Sani Mountain Lodge, you will explore the area around the lodge. Situated on the plateau and right on the edge of the Sani Pass, it’s the perfect base to go on a leisurely hike on the plateau overlooking the Sani Pass or venture a little further on horseback.

The villages of the Sani Top and Mokhotlong areas are some of the most remote villages in Lesotho. Get an inside look at the people living in this tough environment with a visit to a village.

Tonight you will overnight at Sani Mountain Lodge which boasts the highest pub in Africa and where the views are breathtaking. Your accommodation is in a Double/Twin Room with Dinner and Breakfast included.

DAY 3

MALIBA LODGE, TSEHLANYANE NATIONAL PARK, LESOTHO
Ensuite Double/Twin Room – Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

An early breakfast this morning and then depart Sani Mountain Lodge, climbing further to the top of Black Mountain Pass at 3,240m ASL – the base of a hike to the highest peak south of Kilimanjaro makes for a great photo stop!

When Lesotho was under British protection, the trading post called Mokhotlong was often referred to as the ‘most remote outpost of the British Empire’ – a visit to this bustling town will give you a good understanding of modern life in the Lesotho Highlands.

The route from Sani Top to Butha-bothe is often called the Roof of Africa route. Along the way you will see the world’s highest diamond mine at Letseng as well as Afriski Mountain Resort and countless villages and other picturesque scenes. This area of Lesotho is more built up than the remote highlands from where you started. Then to your overnight accommodation at Maliba Lodge in Tsehlenyane National Park, arriving around 18:00. Your accommodation is in a Double/Twin Room with Dinner and Breakfast included.

Included : Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

DAY 4

Departing Maliba Lodge around 08:00 this morning, your first stop is at the Dinosaur Footprints on the Subeng River, evidence that prehistoric life forms once roamed this area. If the river is in flood these ancient footprints are hidden to the world, but usually water levels are low enough to see them.

Leribe Craft Centre is your next stop, a working craft centre where all products are handmade onsite, creating woven and knitted items made from mohair from the local and abundant Angora Goat.

You now head back into the mountains via Mafika-lisiu pass and summit at 3,090 m ASL. Once again, beautiful mountain scenery awaits you.

The Katse Dam is one of the most ambitious engineering projects ever undertaken in Africa, the continent’s second-largest double-curvature arch dam. You will embark on a tour of this impressive dam and have a picnic lunch nearby.

Along the way you will travel through the picturesque Bonkong Nature Reserve

From Thaba Bosiu you drive into the capital city Maseru for lunch where you will gain a good understanding of modern-day city life in Lesotho and its blend of cultures.

By 15:00 you head back into the highlands of Lesotho, going through the Mantsa Pass to the highland town of Semonkong.

Depending on weather and water levels, you may go to the Maletsunyane Falls before checking into Semonkong to witness a breathtaking sunset. Semonkong Lodge, also known as the Place of Smoke, is located in the highlands of Lesotho and is set on the banks of the Maletsunyane River. Just down the river from the lodge, the mighty Maletsunyane Falls is one of the highest single drop waterfalls in Africa, creating a haze of smokey mist as the water plummets 186 m down into a spectacular gorge. This is how Semonkong got its name.

The well-known Duck and Donkey Tavern and Restaurant provides a popular meeting place for both locals and guests and boasts affordable, delicious homemade meals and cold Maluti beers.

Included – Dinner, Bed and Breakfast

DAY 6

MALACHITE MANOR, UNDERBERG, SOUTHERN DRAKENSBERG
