14 Day Namibia Self Drive Safari

Namibia is a large and beautiful country with diverse landscapes and cultures, albeit a small population.  It is a wilderness destination with vast uninhabited spaces, a country of mystery and intrigue. The terrain is often harsh and foreboding though there is life everywhere, even in the desert.
And it is a photographer’s dream, from the ochre colours of the wind-sculpted sand dunes and bare mountains that glow in the morning sun to the unusual landscapes, ethnic cultures and desert life.

From Johannesburg, a 2 to 3 hour drive will get you into the Waterberg which has exciting wildlife reserves with a range of comfortable and luxury accommodation. Then up to the top of the Soutpansberg for an unforgettably magical retreat. And down to the villages of Venda to experience this tribe’s art and drum makers. Now to the cool forests below the Eastern Escarpment and further to the wildlife of the Kruger National Park. Head back to Johannesburg via the scenic sights of the Blyde River Canyon, or go horse riding in Kaapsehoop.

Self Drive in Swaziland & KwaZulu Natal, South Africa

A short drive from Kruger Park will launch you into the Kingdom of Swaziland where you can experience Swazi culture and craft or relax in a mountain reserve with great day hikes. Enter Zululand, the province that has so much to offer tourism including fantastic game parks, wetlands, tropical beaches, Zulu culture, battlefields and the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains.

Self Drive in Lesotho & The Wild Coast, South Africa

Go up Sani Pass and rest at Sani Top Hotel, enter Lesotho and visit Sehlabathebe National Park, Maletsunyane Falls and do a Pony Trek from Semonkong or Malealea Lodge. Exit Lesotho at the capital Maseru and head down through the Free State and Eastern Cape to the Wild Coast. With a few days extra ammunition, visit the mountainous areas of Rhodes, Tiffindell Ski Resort and Maclear.
Or from the Natal Drakensberg, through Griqualand East to the Wild Coast, it’s beautifully undeveloped coastline replete with rocky shelves, cliffs and endless sandy beaches. Options are in abundance here, but Pondoland is spectacular.

Self Drive in Northern Cape, South Africa & Southern Namibia

From Cape Town heading north will take you to the West Coast National Park, the stunning rock formations of the Cedarberg Mountains and into Namaqualand where for a very short period in Spring, flowers of all colours carpet this normally arid landscape.
For a real 4×4 adventure, take the road to Port Nolloth, Alexander Bay and into the Ai-Ais / Richtersveld Transfrontier Park where a world of rock, sand and hardy fauna and flora exist in a fascinating threshold of survival. Cross the Orange River Ferry at Sendelingsdrif and on to the endless Fish River Canyon furrowed into the depths of the earth. Canon Lodges provide a great array of accommodation options. Further north Aus with its feral desert horses, the Ghost Town of Kolmanskop and the coastal town of Luderitz lie on a scenic desert route.
Travel to Sossusvlei along the edge of the Namib Naukluft Park ensuring that you don’t miss any sunrises or sunsets which transform the world’s highest dunes into a spectral paradise.
From here head north, stopping at Solitaire for a Desert Oasis experience, and on to Walvis Bay and the quaint German Town of Swakopmund.

Self Drive in Northern Namibia

Now to the twin tower Inselbergs of Spitzkoppe, a place of intrigue and mystique. Then on to Namibia’s largest mountain, Brandberg, hosting a natural gallery of Bushman rock art, the ochres and sunsets of Twyfelfontein and the stark beauty and wildlife of Palmwag and Sesfontein. Here too you can visit a Himba village for a fascinating cultural experience. Purros should be an essential part of your route where you may find some desert animals and another part of Namibia’s palate of landscapes.
You could head up to Epupa Falls on the Kunene River for a place that looks like no other in Southern Africa and on your way back is really adventurous and descend the notorious Van Zyl’s Pass which would lead you to Purros and Sesfontein.
Move on to Etosha for a Game Park with unique habitats and good gameviewing. Then head north to Tsumkwe for a true Bushman Cultural Experience and maybe venture into the very sandy and wild Khaudum National Park. Otherwise pass through Rundu on your way to the Caprivi and Okavango River where you will find some good game experiences and areas growing in popularity.

Enter Zimbabwe from South Africa at Beit Bridge and travel through Bulawayo to Matopos National Park and on to Hwange National Park that offers good wildlife viewing. Then up to Victoria Falls for a look at this incredible natural wonder and where you can also experience a range of different adventure activities.
Now travel to Lake Kariba, surrounded by game reserves where a few days on a House Boat is an experience not to be missed.
Mana Pools National Park is next, on the Zambezi River. This can truly be rated as one of Southern Africa’s wildest and best gameviewing areas and where you can also do canoe trips on the Zambezi.
Down through Harare and visit Great Zimbabwe, then on to the beautiful Eastern Highlands and the Chimanimani Mountains. From here you can enter Mozambique.
