Now called the Maputo National Reserve, this park covers an area of 780 sq.kms and was originally established to protect the declining animal populations due to the effects of the civil war, specifically the abundant elephant population that once roamed this area.
The reserve is situated south of Maputo and is rich in its diversity of habitats including grassy plains, dune forests, lagoons, swampy marshland and a long coastline.
